About Texas
Texas is the second-largest state by both area and population. Its nickname, the Lone Star State, comes from the single star on the flag of the Republic of Texas.

214 is one of the four originals. 903 split from it in 1990 and 972 in 1996. Fort Worth's 817 dates to 1953, and 682 overlaid it in 2000. Part of eastern Tarrant County, including Arlington and Grapevine, also uses 214 and 972.

Questions about Texas area codes
- How many area codes does Texas have?
- 29. Many areas have more than one, because a newer code can overlay an older one and cover the same ground. Houston has five codes on the same area, and Dallas has four.
- What is the newest Texas area code?
- 621, an overlay in the Houston area that started in January 2025. Before it, 945 joined the Dallas area codes in January 2021.
- Which area codes cover Dallas?
- 214, 972, 469 and 945 all cover the same area. 972 began in 1996 as a split for the area around Dallas and became an overlay across the whole region in 1999. Fort Worth uses 817 and 682.
- Is 972 a country code?
- +972 is the country calling code for Israel. The Dallas area code 972 is part of the North American Numbering Plan, which uses country code 1, so in international format a Dallas number starts with +1 972.
- Does all of Texas use the same time zone?
- No. Most of the state is on Central time. El Paso and Hudspeth counties, in the 915 area code, are on Mountain time.
- Can I get a specific Texas area code like 972 or 512?
- We ask for the code you want when we set up your number. Codes in busy areas such as Dallas and Houston can run short, and some numbers cannot be approved for a business. If your first choice is not available, we set up a toll-free number so your line still goes live.
